Journey to Justice

Start-up guide

Touring the exhibition programme

From 2014-2020 the JtoJ exhibition was available for hire in partnership with local communities; individuals, groups and organisations, particularly those working with young people. We worked with partners to run taster days which drew together interested parties and offered advice and support in the development of local JtoJ cross-community teams. They raised funds, found venues, organised events, arts and education programmes and developed new activities in the community. Local people researched and told stories of when local women, men and children joined together to work for freedoms and rights which became part of the exhibition. Led by cross community steering groups, local JtoJ identities were formed, inspiring those newly motivated by the exhibition programme.

The purpose of this guide is to help local groups prepare for and organise a JtoJ exhibition programme in their area. You can access templates including planning tools, policies, an example budget and adverts for volunteers and local co-ordinators. We hope it can be applied to other community projects.

Between 2015-2020 the exhibition travelled to Newcastle, Sheffield, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Tower Hamlets, Lambeth, Nottingham, Bristol, Newham, Dorchester, Liverpool, Islington, Brent, Leicester and Birmingham. It was booked to go on to Carlisle and Norfolk but unfortunately was prevented from going there by the Covid 19 pandemic.

In 2021 as the UK came out of lockdown, we were delighted to receive an offer from the University of Leicester to house the exhibition. To discuss hiring it, please contact: info@journeytojustice.org.uk

You can see the online version of the exhibition here:

We consulted members of local JtoJ teams in order to develop the guide so it brings together learning from very different communities as at 2018. We hope it offers practical advice for those setting up new community projects and thinking about how to ensure continuation.

We know one size does not fit all and each area creates a programme to suit its priorities within an agreed framework. Members of the national team are always available to advise and support. With special thanks to our Policy Development Volunteer, Verna Chung and everyone who contributed.
