Introducing our new intern, Abbi Wood

We are delighted to introduce our new intern, Abbi Wood! She will be working with us on our Social Justice Plaque Project and conducting research into current blue plaques, schools and museums in the Birmingham area. Welcome to the team, Abbi.

We are at the beginning of our collaboration with the Universities of Birmingham and Leicester to expand our Archives of Activism stories to house those from the Social Justice Plaques project. The aims of this internship and the Social Justice Plaques project is to help demonstrate the importance of appropriate and accurate commemoration of social justice heritage, and the dangers associated with inappropriate or inauthentic commemoration.

As a charity we wish to help school learn about the project and access a tried and tested ‘Teacher Toolkit’ that enables them and their pupils to conduct research to draw up a short-list of Social Justice Champions for their region and create a commemoration plaque for the school-wide chosen champion. By undertaking this researcher role Abbi will be helping JtoJ in its future work with local Birmingham-based schools to identify local social justice “champions” that are currently not commemorated via blue plaques in their city.

Abbi will be helping Journey to Justice continue its work to collect lesser told stories and to encourage collective community-based action for change. Welcome, Abbi.

Thanks to University of Birmingham for funding Abbi’s internship with JtoJ and to Professor George Lewis at University of Leicester for creating the project and reaching out to Journey to Justice to help continue developing it. Much appreciation and gratitude to all.
